Here are some of the questions that students have asked us about accommodation. Click on a question to see our answer. If you have a question that we have not included please contact us.
Do all students stay in a homestay?
95% of our students have homestay accommodation. We recommend this. It is the best way to meet people, practise your English and discover more about our culture. It is possible to stay in a hotel, B&B, youth hostel or maybe a flat (although this can be more difficult to find). Some options can be more expensive than homestay accommodation.
What will my homestay be like?
We have all types of family accommodation, young couples with no children, families with young children or teenagers, older couples and some widows and single people. When we have booked your accommodation we will send you more details of your homestay telling you about their age, children, pets and hobbies.
What can I expect from my homestay?
You will have breakfast and an evening meal with your host family every day. Your family will be happy to do your washing. All towels and bed linen will be provided.
Will I have my own room?
All adult students have a single room unless they ask to share with a friend.
Will I be the only guest in the house?
Sometimes you will be the only guest, but some families have 2 and occasionally 3 students in their house, all in single rooms unless they have requested otherwise.
What is the food like?
Because Britain is a multi-cultural country and because we travel overseas on holiday, our food is varied. Breakfast is usually cereal or toast and a hot drink, lunch is often something light such as a sandwich or a salad and the evening meal, usually eaten around 6pm, is the largest meal of the day and can consist of meat, fish, vegetables, with either pasta, rice or potatoes, depending on the family.
Can I change my host family?
Yes, but the family is entitled to one week's notice.
How far is the host family from the school?
Most host families are within walking distance or a short (maybe 20-minute) bus ride from the school. All families are within 4 kms of the school.
How do I get to school?
The host family will tell or show you how to get to school. Most students walk or get a bus. The family will tell you the bus number you need.
Is there any self-catering accommodation?
Self-catering accommodation, normally used by University of Chester students during term time, is available in the summer months for students aged 18 and over.
Will the school help me to book a guest house or a hotel?
We are happy to recommend guest houses or hotels in Chester and to send you the necessary details. English in Chester’s partner hotel, just around the corner from the school, is the Express by Holiday Inn. English in Chester has special rates at the hotel.
