The new Points-Based System for General Student Visas
From 31st March 2009, the UK is introducing a new visa system for students. After this date, if an adult student is applying for a visa to study in the UK, there will be two possible kinds of visa:
A student visitor visa (SVV): this is for courses less than 6 months long. Students cannot work in the UK with this visa, and they cannot extend their stay without returning to their country and applying for a new visa. Students cannot bring in dependants such as children or partners if they are studying on a SVV. This is the same as the existing student visitor visa. The procedures for applying for a SVV will be the same as they are now.
A general student visa (GSV): this is suitable for courses or periods of study over 6 months long, and for some students who are coming on shorter courses but may wish to extend their stay as a student in the UK. This is a new kind of visa with different requirements from the old student visa. Beginners cannot study on a general student visa, so students will need to provide documentary proof that they are not beginners. Dependants can apply to join students studying on a GSV in the UK for the duration of the course. Students who get a General Student Visa to study at a establishment will only be able to study at the establishment named on their visa. If they then do not attend the school, the school will be legally required to report them to the UK Border Agency.

The Daily Telegraph featured an interview with Richard in the Business Section on Tuesday 3 February. The article was about strategies employed by English in Chester to cope with the recession in the early 90s. The picture shows Richard discussing the article with Lilly (China), Hannah (our Marketing Officer), German (Argentina) and Julie (France).
Tailor-Made Courses
Richard and Nigel met with Ralph Walter and Kurt Walther of Kompetenz-Zentrum Bau Neumarkt GmbH in Chester in mid-January to discuss English language programmes for German construction workers. English in Chester is building upon tailor-made courses run in 2007 and 2008 and is now planning for a new group in June 2009.

Lucky student wins James Bond prize
The name could be Bond, James Bond for English in Chester's student Rainer Kunz, who won a replica of the actual watch worn by Chester born super-spy Daniel Craig in the new Quantum of Solace film. Rainer won the Omega Seamaster watch at the glittering advance screening of Quantum of Solace in Chester on Thursday 30 October. The winning card had been attached underneath one of the 310 seats at the cinema. Before the screening the guests were asked to look under their seats and our lucky student found the card!
Rainer Kunz, who returns to Switzerland to be an apprentice banker with UBS said: "I was very surprised and pleased to win the watch and be presented with the watch which will be a great memory of my time in Chester. Five of us, visiting Chester to improve our English, booked to see the film as we are all big Bond fans. It was a fantastic event and the film, the after-show party at Cruise and winning the watch made it a very special time here in the UK."
