13 July 2007: Collocations

Well, here in Britain we are still waiting for the summer to arrive. The shops are full of summer clothes which nobody has bought as it has been too wet and cold for t-shirts. Not many people have been able to have barbeques yet. Still, there is still August to go and perhaps we will have an Indian summer in the autumn.

I thought we might look at collocations this week. Collocations are words which often go together such as a green apple, a hard-working student, a brilliant day, a fast runner.

Exercise 1
Select a word from the box which you think goes best with the word provided. The last ten are more difficult! Use each answer only once.
cloudy
alphabetical
loud
chocolate
filter
curly
single
classical
soft
direct
vivid
rapidly
exceptionally
major
bitter
razor sharp
broad
widely
hugely
narrowly
Exercise 2
Now try to fit in one of the phrases from Exercise 1 into the following sentences.
She was a tall slim girl with brown   .
He is quite serious and prefers    to pop or rock.
I'll have a    please as I am driving.
Could I have a    for two nights please?
I was very lucky and managed to get a    from Nairobi to Manchester.
She is probably the most intelligent person in the government with her   .
The news was reporting a    in southern Sudan.
Honestly I can't believe it! She was robbed in    and nobody tried to help her.
I am afraid we can't leave early. We will have to stay to the   .
He's extremely    and knows a lot about most subjects.

The saying this week is: It never rains but it pours. We use this expression when we are talking about a number of bad things happening at the same time.

For example you lose your wallet, break your arm and your girlfriend goes off with your best friend all within a couple of days. You would be quite right to complain that "It never rains but it pours!"

Hope the summer is drier and warmer where you are.
Best wishes from everyone at English in Chester!
