12 April 2008: Compound Nouns

Here we are in what is supposed to be spring and it is COLD! COLD! COLD! So we'll have some good news to cheer everyone up: Sophie got married and is very happy and many congratulations to her. Harriet is off on holiday on Monday and we have a saying in English: "While the cat's away, the mice will play". I bet you can all guess what it means.

I thought we might look at compound nouns this week. Sometimes in English it is possible to join together two words to make one noun, for example birthday and cake can become birthday cake. These combinations are very important if you want to increase your vocabulary and make your English sound natural.
