20 June 2008: Confusing Words

Well, the football is going strong and Mathew is relieved that England aren't playing as he really wants Spain to win. We are at the beginning of the summer so obviously the weather is bad and poor old Sam and Leander are so busy they don't know where to start. I am sure everything will be fine in the end and all the students will be on placed with families and will be at school on time on Monday.

I thought it was time we looked at some words which people often confuse, like say and tell, remember and remind.

Exercise 1
Choose the right word to complete the sentence.
He    me that he would be late today.
She was    me about her holiday when the bus came.
I honestly can't    what I was supposed to buy for supper tonight.
I really like that picture. It    me of the holiday we had in Egypt.
I    I pass the exam.
I    I hadn't eaten so much chocolate.
Could you possibly    me ten pounds until next week? I'm really broke.
I was so broke I had to    ten pounds from Judith.
He hasn't finished his homework    so he can't go out.
David has    done his homework so he can go out.
Exercise 2
Choose the right word to complete the sentence.
It really isn't much    waiting for the bus in the rain.
He pulled a    face to make me laugh.
Shall we    swimming tomorrow?
Let's    tennis this evening.
He goes to    every morning in spite of being 75 years old.
His new    is much better paid than his last one.
She failed the exam so she will have to    it again.
Let's hope she    it this time.
This medicine will    you getting malaria when you go to Africa.
It is best to    driving through the city centre if at all possible.

The word this week is contemporaneous which is a formal word meaning happening or existing at the same time. Here is an example: "There are several contemporaneous accounts of the meeting."

Have a good week.
Best wishes from all at English in Chester
