Stay In Touch

22 January 2007: Everyday Expressions & Competition

This is the first Stay in Touch this year so I hope you all had a wonderful time at the New year and I hope that 2007 will bring you all the health, happiness and prosperity you could ever wish for.

Everyone at English in Chester is happy to be back at work after the holiday. Sophie has safely returned from her trip to Australia as has Dom, Martin had a good time skiing and Harriet went to Seville. Richard, Hannah and Nick are still in Barbados and we are all very jealous that they are enjoying the sun while Chester is wet, windy and very dark.

Competition - Win a FREE 2-week English course!

The competition is now closed. Look out for our next Stay in Touch competition in 2008!
The New Year is always a time to get to know people and to make new friends so I thought we would start off 2007 with some everyday expressions in English. The first exercise is easier and the second exercise is more difficult.

Exercise 1
Match column A with column B.
Drag-and-drop your chosen answer into one of the spaces below. Only use each answer once.
So do I. I'm really fed up with this weather.
I'm coming, I'm coming.
Yes please, I'd love some. I'm really hungry tonight.
I've no idea. This one is mine.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
No way. I'm really broke myself this week.
Yes, it was great. What about you?
That's a good idea. We can watch the news while we are eating.
That would be lovely thank you.
Yes, it cost a fortune.
Column AColumn B
1:Did you have a good holiday?
2:Let's have our lunch in the common room?
3:I wish it would stop raining.
4:I like your new coat. Was it expensive?
5:Would you like some more vegetables?
6:Shall I help you with the washing up?
7:Where's my book? Have you got it?
8:Could you lend me £15 until next week?
9:That was a delicious meal, thank you.
10:Get a move on. We'll be late!

Exercise 2
Select the correct response from the box.
Shall I get you another drink?

What do you mean you're not coming?

I think I'll have the apple pie. What about you?

Excuse me. Have I met you somewhere before?

I can't stand the sight of him!

I think Andy was a bit rude in the pub last night.

I knew I shouldn't have eaten that pudding.

I could do with a break.

The bus was late again this morning.

She's a bit thick isn't she?

The saying this week is: "out of sight, out of mind". It means that if you don't see or hear from someone you tend to forget about them.

Have a good fortnight and don't forget to enter the competition!
