22 February 2008: Everyday Expressions

It has been a cold week here in Chester but we have been so busy that we haven't had time to worry about the weather. Many of the students have enjoyed watching the football and Mathew was very happy about Liverpool's result in the Champion League. He came to school the next day wearing his Liverpool shirt and wasn't at all unhappy that Manchester only drew with Lyons!

Did you know that 2008 is a leap year? February has 29 days and on the 29th day a girl is allowed to ask a man to marry her! So this is your chance to propose to the man of your dreams!

I thought we might look at some everyday expressions this week. We'll start with some really easy ones but the second exercise is much more difficult!

Exercise 1
Select the correct answer for each sentence.
May I have some more potatoes?
Let's go Telford's tonight.
Would you like to come to dinner tomorrow?
What's your favourite colour?
I don't feel very well.
What time is the match tonight?
Seen any good films lately?
Time for lunch.
Can I help you?
A single to Liverpol.
Exercise 2
Now try this more difficult task!
May I speak to James Peters please?
Who was that I saw you with last night?
How's your mother?
How many times do I have to ask you to put your books away and not leave them on the floor?
Want a lift to the station?
Sorry I'm late. I got caught in the traffic.
I wish you wouldn't leave your shoes on the kitchen floor.
What would you like for supper?
What are you doing on your day off?
Did you get the job you applied for?

The saying this week is "Absence makes the heart grow fonder". It means that if you don't see someone for a long time you will like them even more than you did before.

Enjoy the extra day in February!
Best wishes from all at English in Chester.
