26 October 2007: Expressions with Keep & Hold

The days are getting shorter, the mornings are quite dark and Chester is getting ready for Christmas. Too early for most of us because it is still only October and a long time before we want to start thinking about Christmas! The clocks go back this week end so we can all have an extra hour in bed on Sunday morning.

We are looking at expressions with keep and hold this week.

Exercise 1
Look at the phrases below and decide which you keep and which you hold.
KeepHold
1:a straight face
2:someone's hand
3:a diary
4:a promise
5:a demonstration
6:someone responsible for something
7:someone at gunpoint
8:fit
9:within the speed limit
10:someone hostage
Exercise 2
Now put one of the expressions into the gaps in the following sentences.
The postal workers    to protest about the changes to their working hours.
It was difficult for the students to    when the professor started to speak without realising that his shirt buttons were undone.
But you said you would do it! You have to   .
Many people    during the war and now it is really interesting to read how different life was in those days.
The journalist was    for a number of months while his captors tried to persuade the government to pay ransom.
The police were    the death of the innocent man shot by accident.
The robber    and forced him to open the safe and produce the money.
I try to    by going to the gym every week.
There are speed cameras all over the town so be careful about   .
Please    while we cross this busy road.

The saying this week is: "The early bird catches the worm." It means that if you get somewhere early you will be luckier and perhaps get things which those who come later won't get.

Have a good fortnight!
Love from all at English in Chester
