17 November 2006: Informal & Slang English

I can't believe how quickly times is going, it seems like the summer was still with us last week but now I realise that Christmas is just around the corner. They switched the lights on in Chester this week and everything is looking very festive and nice.

Another reason why Chester is in the news at the moment is that the new James Bond film, Casino Royale, stars the Chester born actor Daniel Craig. So not only can you learn the best English in Chester, but you might also catch a glimpse of the fantastic agent 007!

Mathew is working hard in Prague, Andy and Sam are busy downstairs and the staff room is not nearly as crowded as it has been. There are far fewer students around but everyone is working really hard.

In September we had a look at some really informal English or rather slang and I thought we might have another look this week. This is the kind of language you can use to your friends and people you know very well but not your headmaster or boss!

Now fit one of the above expressions into the blanks in these sentences.
Who's that girl with Andy tonight? She's   .
I'm not 100% sure but I think we need to    to get to Mathew Street.
A: Doing anything special tonight?
B: Thought I'd just    with a couple of pints and a carry out.
Andy and Mathew had a right    last night. They just couldn't agree on whose turn it was to organise the pub tour.
I just don't understand him at all. If you ask me the whole situation is a bit   .
Can you hang on for a minute while I go to a   . I've only got a couple of quid on me.
A: Who do you think will win tonight?
B: Liverpool, it's a   .
A: Guess what? I got the job I went for last week!
B:   ! Drinks on you tonight!
You looked a bit   . What's up?
Right.   . Got a job to do, see you later.

The word this week is mandatory, which means something ordered by law or rule.

"It is mandatory to wear a seat belt when you are in a car."

Enjoy the weekend,
Harriet and everyone at English in Chester
