14 September 2006: Informal English

Another two weeks gone by and it's Friday again. There's a saying in English, Thank God it's Friday and I expect you have the same sentiment yourselves.

It might be a good idea to look at some really informal English this week because we had a student last month who wanted to know some slang words to teach her pupils. The following words/phrases are not real slang but quite informal language, so don't say it to the boss!

Exercise 1
Match the informal word(s) with their meanings.
Drag-and-drop your chosen answer into one of the spaces below. Only use each answer once.
footie
legless
a wimp
to have a gander
to knock something
to make waves
to be loaded
thinggummy
keep your hair on
a rip-off
MeaningInformal Expression
1:something you don't know the exact word for
2:to be very rich
3:to be very drunk
4:to cause trouble
5:something which was much more expensive than it ought to be
6:football
7:someone weak/feeble
8:to criticise something
9:keep calm
10:to take a look at something
Drag-and-drop your chosen answer into one of the spaces below. Only use each answer once.

Exercise 2
Now fit one of the above expressions into the blanks in these sentences:
Be careful what you say to Dave. He's always    and upsetting people.
I'm staying in to watch the    tonight.
Let's    at your photos.
   it was only a joke!
Don't    it. This car has taken me all round Britain.
He's such a    , never willing to try anything new.
Andy admitted being    after the pub tour.
That meal was a right    . I'm never going there again!
Have you seen his new lap-top? He must be    .
Where have you put the    ? You know what I mean.

I think that there is enough new vocabulary in this week's exercises so there will be no word of the week this week.

Have a good fortnight.

Best wishes from everyone at English in Chester
