4 May 2007: Linking Words

We are getting ready for the summer and the British Council Inspection and the new self access centre is about to be opened so are all very busy. Hope you are all enjoying the time of year, lots of people have told me that May is their very favourite month so enjoy it everyone.

Time to look at linking words again, these are very important both for written and spoken English.

Exercise 1
Choose the best words for the gaps in the sentences below.
Promise me that you will phone me    you get to the airport.
"I'll take some money with me just    I see something I want to buy."
Jen promised to look after Harriet's cat    she was on holiday.
I set the alarm for 6.30 in the morning    I wouldn't miss the train.
We waited at the platform    the train had disappeared into the distance.
You mustn't forget to lock the door    leaving the house in the morning.
He was so tired    he had stayed up late to watch the football match.
you stop eating so much chocolate you won't be able to fit into your bikini!
He didn't come home until past midnight    he had promised that he would be in by 9pm.
He decided to buy a new car    having lost his job the previous month.
Exercise 2
These next ones are more difficult. You have to choose the right linking word, making sure that the sentence makes sense!
I have to get this assignment in    the end of the day.
having a swim we lay in the sun, watching the boats in the distance.
I saw him go into the office and ten minutes    he came out looking very pale.
She stayed at school    she was 18 and then went to university.
We decided to have a barbeque    the weather forecast saying there was rain coming.
He could beat his father at chess    he was only 8.
I like holidays by the sea    my husband prefers to go to the mountains.
I quite like octopus,    I really love oysters.
He's getting quite tall,    the time he is 14 he will be taller than his father!
how hard he tried, he just couldn't understand what she was saying.

The word this week is derisive, which is an adjective showing that you think someone or something is stupid.

"That was a very derisive comment. Surely you could have been more sensitive."

Have a good May and enjoy the better weather, the blossom and all the flowers.
