2 October 2009: Prepositions

A lot of exciting things are happening at English in Chester and there is a new brochure for you to look at. There are new courses and a new language laboratory in the computer room! You won't recognise us.

Mat tells me that the social programme has been a great success this summer, with highlights such as Edinburgh and the Manchester United match being very popular with many students while the teenagers preferred Alton Towers and the fifty plus loved "Annie". Everyone is well, Mathew has a new house and Leander is slowly but surely regaining her strength.

I thought we might look at some prepositions this week as there are always a few more to learn and to use.

Exercise 1
Choose the correct preposition to complete the sentences.

Lend you £3000! You must be    of your mind!
second thoughts, I think I will have the salmon.

The winning numbers are all chosen    random.
Certain animal species are bred    captivity to ensure their survival.
He closed his eyes and jumped    the water. It was so icy cold it took his breath away.
We all laughed at him when he turned up at school    his pyjamas.
a glance I'd say it was written in Swedish.
Exercise 2
Choose the correct preposition to complete the sentences.
No, you can't stay out until 13.00. It is far too late. It is    of the question.
Thank you for sending us your C.V. We will contact you    due course.
general, I'd say it was easier to learn a language when you are 10 than when you are 60.
I can't remember the word. It is    the tip of my tongue.
It is a surprising fact that    average, men earn 25% more than women.
He specialises    ancient Greek architecture.
It can't have been John you saw last night. He is    holiday in Croatia.
Why on earth are they getting married? They have absolutely nothing    common.
You have to pay the rent three months    advance.
last! That is the end of this exercise!

The proverb this week is "One man's meat is another man's poison". It means that what is good for someone else is not necessarily good for you. Have a good week!
Love from everyone @ English in Chester!
