Stay In Touch

11 August 2006: Prepositions

There is now a new way of accessing Stay in Touch. Instead of having it sent as an e-mail every week you can go to www.english-in-chester.co.uk/stayintouch.

The lessons will go out every two weeks instead of once a week and the website experts are looking at improving the format and the set up. The technology behind this is, as you probably all know, well beyond me but I hope you will all continue looking at the tasks and improving your English.

Lots of people are still having problems with prepositions and I thought we might look at some of the more common ones this week.

Exercise
See if you can complete the sentence using the correct preposition.
Have you heard the joke    the dog and the elephant?
When she returned from her 4 weeks in Chester, her mother welcomed her back    open arms.
Martin was tired after working for 8 hours    a break.
What's wrong    Patsy today?
Don't worry    the spelling, I just want you to write something!
I'm sick    having to wash all the coffee cups at number 2.
Are you really serious    going to Cuba next month?
What's the use    planning a barbeque, it's bound to rain!
I didn't want her to hear so I swore quietly    my breath.
After running up and down the stairs half a dozen times, I was    of breath.

The word this week is long-standing which is an adjective used to describe something which has existed for a long time. There was a long-standing agreement between the neighbours about taking it in turns to cut the grass.

Have a good fortnight.

Best wishes from everyone at English in Chester
