20 October 2006: Spotting Mistakes

Autumn is coming to Chester and the leaves are changing colour. It is getting darker in the mornings and the clocks go back on the 29th of October so I guess we have to accept that winter is coming and there is nothing we can do about it.

Marion Brader the winner of last year's competition has just completed her course and she had a really good time. The next competition is early in January so start revising your English now, the prize is a FREE two week course for the lucky person who completes the best entry form!

I thought we might try a Spot the Mistake exercise this week to see how good you all are at recognising what is right and what is wrong in a sentence.

Exercise
Mark which sentences are correct and which are incorrect. See if you can spot the incorrect words yourself!
CorrectIncorrect
1:Martin doesn't like white wine. He prefers red
2:Patsy went home early yesterday for she had a headache.
3:Today is Friday so tomorrow is Saturday. I like the weekends.
4:David is going to Spain next week. Isn't he lucky!
5:I'm looking forward to see my daughters very soon.
6:He bought a very expensive car because he had no money.
7:The football spectators cheered when he scored the goal.
8:I expect taxes to raise as a result of the new budget.
9:I didn't finish my work yet so I can't go home.
10:I can't afford to eat out in restaurants every week.

The proverb this week is: It never rains but it pours. We use this expression when everything bad seems to happen at the same time.

Have a good fortnight,
Love from everyone at English in Chester.
