21 June 2009: Understanding a Bar Chart

Most of the exams are over but students are still studying for the IELTS exam so I thought we might look at a bar chart today to see what sort of language is used to describe the information given.

The above chart show the results of a survey carried out in Chester in March 2007. The numbers on the left show how many hours per week teenagers spent doing the following activities: going to pubs/discos, watching television, shopping, doing homework, doing sport, watching DVDs and bowling.

Exercise
Look at the bar chart and answer the following questions.
TrueFalse
1:The most popular activity was watching television.
2:The least popular activity was going to pubs/discos.
3:Teenagers spent more time going shopping than doing sport.
4:Bowling was not as popular as doing sport.
5:Teenagers spent less time doing their homework than watching television.
6:The number of hours spent going to pubs/discos remained the same in 2006 and 2007.
7:The number of hours spent going to pubs/discos remained steady in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
8:In 2002 they spent less time watching television than going shopping.
9:Students spent less time doing homework in 2002 than they did in 2007.
10:There was a steady increase in the number of hours spent going shopping.
11:There was a sudden and sharp decrease in the amount of time spent doing sport between 2005 and 2007.
12:The amount of time spent watching DVDs reached a peak in 2007.

Now see if you can make the false sentences true. Make a note of the sort of language used to analyse bar charts.

The saying this week is: "Don't look a gift horse in the eye". It means that if someone gives you something you should be grateful even if you don?t really like it. Enjoy yourselves and I hope the weather is good where you are.
