17 October 2008: Words and Prepositions

The days are getting shorter, woolly hats are beginning to appear on heads and yesterday someone left a pair of gloves in the computer room. It must be autumn! It is the time of year when people really settle down and focus on their work as the weather makes it less inviting to out in the evenings. Of course a lot of people stay at home to watch "X Factor" on the television but others want to improve their English and ask about prepositions and phrasal verbs. Both are quite challenging so let's take a quick look at prepositions first and then some phrasal verbs later.

Exercise 1
Decide which preposition can be used to complete the sentences.
Why don't you look up the meaning of the word    the dictionary?
I'm going    the cinema tonight. Do you want to come?
Stop complaining    the weather. Let's just be happy that it's Saturday.
Whose car is that? Surely it can't belong    John?
I don't really approve    people smoking in the kitchen. Would you mind going outside?
We spent the whole evening arguing    what to watch on television. It was a complete disaster.
Sheila seems very happy today. Do you think she's    love?
He apologised    coming late and explained that there had been an accident on the motorway.
I'm looking forward    the week-end.
It was very good    him to buy me some flowers.
Exercise 2
This time you have to choose the correct preposition from the choices given.
Charlie was very enthusiastic    his new job.
This type of wine is characteristic    the Rhine region.
I'm quite fond    Peter really, in spite of his moodiness.
He's really interested    history of art and famous C18 artists.
I have no intention    giving up my car and replacing it with a bicycle.
I'm sorry but your pink tie really doesn't go    your red shirt.
We eventually decided    going on holiday to Spain and went to France instead.
I'll do it. I'm an expert    mending old machines.
I'd like some information    times of trains to Manchester please.
It isn't my iPod. I borrowed it    Michael.

The saying this week is as good as gold. Here is a sentence with it:

"The children were as good as gold while their father watched the football match."

It means the children behaved very well and were no trouble at all.

Have a good time and don't forget to work hard on your prepositions!
